Uses
The apps. The gear. The services.
Date Updated: August 17, 2024
Development
- VS Code - Yes, I finally gave up on Sublime Text.
- Insomnia - REST client of choice.
- iTerm2 - Better customization options than Terminal.app.
- MonoLisa Font - I was reluctant to spend money on a font when I got by just fine for years with free ones but this one is totally worth every dollar. JetBrains Mono was what I had been using before.
- Tokyo Night theme - Theme and color scheme for various programs.
Apps
- Lunar - For controlling external monitor brightness and volume.
- Stand - A godsend when working for long stretches.
- Wipr - No-nonsense content blocker for Safari. I use the uBlock Origin browser extension on Firefox and Chromium-based browsers.
- Maccy - Free and open-source clipboard manager. Trust me, you need this. Used to use CopyClip.
- Hidden Bar - Lets me hide menu bar icons I don’t want to see.
- Rectangle - Because macOS doesn’t have window snapping out-of-the-box. Free and open-source; was using Magnet before.
- DaisyDisk - Makes the sting of using a 256GB SSD less painful.
- IINA - Built on top of mpv. Perfect balance of power and simplicity.
- AntennaPod - Best podcast player on Android. I still keep Pocket Casts around for discovery.
- Paisa - Simple expense tracker.
- 1Password - Best password manager on the planet.
- Apple Music (Family) - Music streaming service of choice. I really like how it lets me upload and sync music from elsewhere.
- Netflix - You already know what this is.
I just use a lot of first-party apps for the rest like Mail.app on macOS and Gmail on Android.
CLIs
Gear
- Nothing Phone (2a) - Midrange all-rounder with bold design. Used to use a Google Pixel 6a.
- CMF Buds Pro - Budget decent-sounding wireless earbuds with in-ear detection, (basic) noise-cancellation, and excellent battery life.
- Apple Mac Mini (M1, 2020) - Base-model. Code compilation beast; eats through large projects without breaking a sweat. It’s the best computer I have ever owned.
- Philips 4K Ultra HD LCD monitor (288E2A) - 4K Monitor. I use 2x scaling; looks like 1920x1080. Used to use a Mi 23.8” Desktop Monitor 1C.
- Apple Magic Keybord - Replaced my Royal Kludge RK84 Mechanical Keybord because I wanted something with better macOS integration. Yes, I am aware that there are mechanical keyboards that are play nice with the Mac and yes, I am also aware that there are ones that can be configured to do so. Perhaps some other time though.
- Apple Magic Mouse - My MX Anywhere 2S broke and I’ve had enough of Logitech’s ever-worsening build quality. And yes, the Magic Mouse is as bad as everyone says.
- Samson SR850 - Budget semi-open studio headphones.
- 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ - A game controller.
